Our Story
Evans and Schumacher families of Savoy and Philo, Illinois, grow Walker’s Prairie Harvest Popcorn in the tradition of Walker H. Evans. Beginning in 1938, he grew popcorn in Iowa for more than 55 years and was the first producer in his community to raise hybrid varieties in the early years of hybridization. He continued as consultant until his passing in 2002.
Family members have grown Walker’s Popcorn in Illinois since 1993. The project began as seven short rows of popcorn in the family garden, using seed from Grandpa Walker. Those of all ages get involved in planning the plots; choosing varieties to grow; controlling weeds and insects; harvesting the crop; shelling, sorting, cleaning and storing it; packaging the product; and consuming, gifting or marketing it. Neighbors and other friends help in many important ways.
This project has grown into a varied, year-round effort that supports a family education fund for the young family members and friends involved. In 2025 the project involved 2½ acres of red corn that produced more than 8,000 pounds of corn ready for popping.
